Ideas for children
Hello children! The Black Forest Open Air Museum prepared you lots of surprises!
On this page you’ll find tips for your museum visit. In the museum’s workshop you’ll be able to build a bird call or a water wheel, at the Falkenhof farmstead you can lie down in a real bed with a straw mattress and see how dark it was in the past when they used candlelight.
Let’s go! There are so many things to discover.
For the hobbyists and artisans
In the Hotzenwald farmstead you’ll find a workshop, in which there is an artisan. His name is Herr Lehmann and he’ll help you if you want to build a cuckoo pipe. Or a water wheel or a stable lantern or a deciduous wood basket…
For those who’d like to scoop out water or like to experience a lot of things
At the playground you’ll find a fountain. No, it looks rather like two fountains fitting into each other. There is a cartwheel on them and a tud with water. When you turn the wheel, water flows in a canal and then there are small wheels which begin to turn- well, it would be better to test it yourselves!
For the clever ones
On the first floor of the Falkenhof farmstead there is a room, where you are going to discover a lot of things: How much light was in a room when they used oil lamps? How dark was it when they used candlelight?
For those who want to lie down
And when you come out of the room where you can test lights, you arrive to the bedrooms through a kind of balcony. In one of them is an old bed, which is filled with straw like in the past. You can lie down and try it.
For those who like to riddle by feeling
In the stable of the Hippenseppenhof farmstead, when you enter on the left, they are little bags. What is inside? Feel them and riddle!
For all smart foxes
In the bedrooms of our ‘Falkenhof’ you might show us how well you retain related pictures. A huge wall game presents photos of children from former times.
For all little musicians
Everyone who likes music will as well be satisfied in our Open Air Museum. Right at the beginning of the museum tour you will find a farm called “Hippenseppenhof”. There, in an old cowstable, you may make music with a huge number of cowbells.
